Two of Turkey’s main unions have called a nationwide strike today. Labour groups representing doctors, engineers and dentists have said they too will take part in the national stoppage.
In Istanbul residents banged pots outside their windows in support of the demonstrators.
The unrest which was sparked by the forced eviction of protesters from Gezi Park in the centre of the city has so far left four people dead and about 5,000 injured according to the Turkish medical Association..
