There has been a fifth night of unrest in Turkey.

The demonstrations in Istanbul began peacefully. Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc had earlier apologised for police brutality over the last few days.

He is due to hold a meeting with some of the organisers of the original protests over the redevelopment of Gezi Park later on Wednesday.

The situation deteriorated after the initial period of respite following Arinc’s apology. Police fired water cannon and tear gas at the crowds after they refused to disperse.

Many jumped over makeshift barricades hastily erected to prevent the police from entering Taksim Square.

Protests went off peacefully in Ankara until people were asked to leave at around midnight. The crowd began to throw stones and the police retaliated with smoke grenades.

So far, two people have been killed since the unrest began last week. Several thousand have been injured.
